Before any significant change can take place, as a country we must first get to a place where EVERYONE is treated equally across the board. Laws, education, healthcare, jobs, banking, housing, etc. everyone must be treated the same, regardless of sex, race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, marital status, or disability. In order for this country to even come close to living up to its promise that all 'men' are created equal, full equality across the board is the only solution.
